Encaustic Collage Retreat

Class Description and Statement

For this retreat you will learn the basics of working with Encaustic (heated Beeswax-based paint) on wooden panels.  We will create prints and drawings and then add in fabrics and other collage materials to assemble complexly layered pieces of artwork. We may even do some stitching, some stenciling, some hammering and some stamping, too!! Playing and exploring is what this retreat is about. No previous experience with Encaustic painting is required. All tools and materials will be provided.

I love teaching, especially Encaustic painting because it is so versatile. There is something for everyone. It acts as both an adhesive and a preservative, it can be colored or transparent. It can be combined with oil paint, watercolor and ink.  You can draw directly on it. Objects can be embedded in it and images can be transferred using simple burnishing techniques. Whatever your skill level with materials, you can build a personal and nuanced artwork.

I have always enjoyed trying new materials and have worked with many beyond traditional painting and drawing media including, non-silver photography, gilding, rug hooking, digital embroidery, Byzantine icon painting, quilting and fresco, to name a few. I like to think my experience in multiple artforms helps me teach students of varied interests. After familiarizing students with the Encaustic Collage process, I try to bring out the unique artistic voice in each student, especially those new to creating their own work. I show students how to work the basics of a material and then encourage them to find their individual path.

I encourage you to look at my “Leslie Giuliani” YouTube channel to see demos of various Encaustic process, including collage, and get to know me and my favorite medium.
